Independence is not just about gaining freedom from colonialists, but about shaping the country for a better future, especially for the younger generation to ensure a better life for future generations.
Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said this kind of independence is crucial for Malaysia to chart its own course without external influences and ensure the country progresses on the right path.
"We must ensure that the younger generation has good values, behavior, and morals, as well as social stability. We must be confident that if we can do better today, our tomorrow will be brighter.
"Our desire is not just for independence, but we also want freedom for the country so that it can develop according to our own model. We want to move forward in our own way."
Today, Awang Tengah held the celebration of "Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2023 Integrasi" here, which included convoys from Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
Director of Sabah Information Department Jainisah Mohd Noor, Sarawak Information Director Jaafar Jantan, and Labuan Information Director Azman Sipan also attended the event.
The program's over 70 participants held meetings in Semporna, Sabah yesterday and in Lawas today to coincide with the celebrations of National Day and Malaysia Day.
Awang Tengah said that in shaping the country, Malaysia must continue to strive to involve every race and region to ensure that every citizen continues to enjoy peace and prosperity.
"We want development not just in one place or region, but it must involve all areas and communities.
"That's why Sarawak and Sabah must have fair allocation of funds."
He added that Malaysians should also appreciate the principles contained in the "Rukun Negara" so that they can collectively shape Malaysia into a great nation. - Malaysia
